Gas leaks and explosions are occurrences that rarely happens as far back as I can remember, the maximum I have ever heard then was a gas leak in the home occasional caused by children playing with the gas regulator when the parents were not around or even the parents themselves forgetting to close the regulator after the usage of the gas, that is why most people then will say that it is not advisable for couples with children to use gas cylinders at home due to the kids, but those were the days when Kerosene was cheap and easily available.
Going forward, Kerosene becomes the black gold and out of the reach of many Nigerians apart from being very scarce, then the evil gas cylinders that were neglected earlier on becomes so cheap, affordable and ubiquitous and then the rare occurrence of gas explosions became an almost every day thing.
The truth is, back then when almost everyone uses Kerosene, during scarcity, we have heard reports of kerosene explosions wiping out families due to some unscrupulous persons mixing the kerosene product with some other highly volatile products just to make gains, so meaning that even the kerosene can be explosive if adulterated but not through misuse.
This then brings us to the gas issues, and why there are explosions here and there:
GAS IS A HIGHLY VOLATILE PRODUCT
Gas is not Kerosene; in fact, kerosene is one of the least volatile products from the crude oil, while gas is one of the most highly volatile products. That is why you will notice a pop sound when you light your gas showing that it burns instantly when ignited in air, same as the petrol, so it should be handled with extra care but what happens when you are used to kerosene that you can handle anyhow which only due to its scarcity, it suddenly finds yourself using gas, I can evidently say you will handle it like kerosene. This is one of the reasons why we have such explosions becoming rampant now
PEOPLE USE THE GAS CYLINDER LIKE THE STOVE:
People stoves are the donkey of the house, and if you see some people stove, you will almost want to help the stove to beg so that it can be retired from service, this is the same way many Nigerians are using gas cylinders forgetting that it is not a stove, a gas cylinder can only serve you for five years only, so meaning if I buy a gas cylinder today, in 2025 I should retire it and buy a new one, but the issue is that how do you know whether the one you are buying is really new or just an expired but refurbish cylinder, you can check this article on how to check the expiry date of your cylinder.
GAS STATIONS EVERYWHERE:
Since people could no longer get their favorites kerosene, there was an instant boom in the market of gas suppliers as many people swap over to gas, this made many gas refilling stations to pop up everywhere and the trend now is that most filling stations that didn’t sell previously started selling gas alongside their volatile PMS, this is one of the reason why the gas explosion that occurs in Ajegunle which was caused by a phone call igniting a gas leak, and for your information, filling stations are not expected to be sited in residential areas due to the volatile products they sell, so also are gas filling stations.
I will leave us to chew on this if the regulatory bodies are actually functioning, the locating of these dangerous filling stations in residential areas won’t even have happened in the first place and if we ourselves are so careful enough, we won’t have rented out any shop in the city center for a mini depot gas refiller to use thereby endangering not only our own life but the lives of others
